Bokusho is an abstract form of sumi-e or brush calligraphy.
This series began in 2006 during a month spent in the countryside of southern France. My materials were purposefully limited but included ink and rice paper. Large abstract drawings were made of the leafless, gnarled plane trees abundant in the area, then the drawings were torn and manipulated to form the basis for the developing grid paintings.
